Budgeting & Cost Optimization

We analyse cost by driver and activity to establish what is genuinely variable and what each line of spend buys the business. Reductions are presented with their operational and risk consequences stated, so the board is never choosing a saving without seeing what it gives up. We then rebuild the budget process that allowed the drift in the first place, and track realised savings to the ledger so claimed benefits are visible in the accounts. It matters because across-the-board cuts remove good cost and bad cost in equal measure.

In short

Budgeting and cost optimisation reduces cost with an understanding of what each cost actually buys, rather than through uniform cuts. The goal is a lower cost base that the business can still operate from, not a saving that reverses within a year.

What we do

The work inside budgeting & cost optimization.

Cost driver analysis

We break cost down by driver and activity to establish what is genuinely variable rather than fixed by assumption. Much of what an organisation treats as unavoidable turns out to be a choice once the driver is understood. This analysis is where durable savings are found, as opposed to one-off deferrals.

Spend and contract review

We review third-party spend, contracts and upcoming renewals for genuine, repeatable reduction. Auto-renewing contracts and fragmented supplier arrangements are a reliable source of cost that no longer buys what it once did. Addressing them tends to deliver more, and more durably, than headcount action.

Reduction options with consequences

We present each reduction option with its operational and risk consequence, not merely the saving figure. A saving that quietly degrades service or control is rarely worth what it appears to be. Stating the consequence lets the board decide with its eyes open rather than discover the cost later.

Budget process redesign and tracking

We rebuild the budget process so it does not default to last year plus a percentage, and we track realised savings against plan. Defining how each saving will show up in the accounts before it is claimed is what separates real reduction from a slide. Without that line of sight, savings programmes routinely fail to reach the ledger.

What you receive

Deliverables, in writing.

Documented output your teams keep and can act on without us in the room.

  • Spend and contract review findings
  • Reduction options with consequences and savings
  • Savings tracking against realised results

When this work helps

You may be facing this.

  • Cost has grown faster than revenue
  • Budgets are last year plus a percentage
  • Previous cost programmes did not deliver claimed savings

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand the decision, the financial context, and how finance currently operates. We establish exactly what question the engagement must answer, so a business-case review and a process redesign are not confused with one another.

  2. 02

    Assess

Review the case, processes, controls, and reporting against what the organisation needs to rely on. We report where the numbers and processes are dependable and where they rest on assumptions that will not hold under pressure.

  3. 03

    Design

Set out the financial approach, process design, control set, and reporting model. Definitions, ownership, and controls are documented so the improvement does not depend on us remaining involved.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Support implementation, then track cost and benefit against what was approved. We measure realised value against the criteria agreed at the outset, so the decision is held to account rather than forgotten.
