Control Testing & Assurance

Evidence assembled hurriedly before each audit is both expensive and fragile, and it tells management nothing between audits. We test controls on a defined cycle, with sample sizes that support a conclusion, and collect the evidence at the time each control operates rather than reconstructing it later. Exceptions are recorded with their cause and impact instead of being quietly re-performed, because suppressed exceptions are what destroy the credibility of an assurance programme. The result is a standing assurance report that management and auditors can rely on, and a steady reduction in the effort each audit demands.

In short

Control testing and assurance verifies with evidence that controls operated as intended over a period. Done on a cycle, it turns the annual scramble for evidence into a by-product of controls simply running.

What we do

The work inside control testing & assurance.

Test plan and sampling

We define how each control is tested and set sample sizes large enough to support the conclusion drawn from them. A test that examines one instance proves little about how a control behaved across a year. The plan makes the method explicit, so a reviewer can see the basis for each assurance statement rather than taking it on trust.

Evidence collection

We collect evidence at the point the control operates, ideally captured automatically by the systems involved. Evidence gathered contemporaneously is both more reliable and far cheaper than reconstructing it months later. Automating collection for technical controls is usually the single biggest reduction in the recurring cost of assurance.

Exception handling

We record exceptions with their cause and impact rather than quietly re-performing the control until it passes. An exception is information about where a control is weak, and hiding it discards exactly the signal the programme exists to produce. Each exception is tracked through remediation and re-tested, so it is closed on evidence rather than assertion.

Assurance reporting

We report control health in a form management and auditors can actually rely on, showing what was tested, what passed and what did not. Honest reporting, including exceptions, is what makes the assurance credible when an external party examines it. It also lets management see deterioration early, while it is still cheap to correct.

What you receive

When this work helps

You may be facing this.

  • Evidence is assembled hurriedly before each audit
  • Controls are assumed effective without testing
  • Exceptions are fixed but never analysed

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Establish the obligations, decision rights, and risks that genuinely matter to this organisation. We separate the requirements that truly apply from those assumed to, so effort is not spent governing risks you do not carry.

  2. 02

    Assess

Review existing controls, policy, evidence, and how the work is actually performed. We compare the control on paper with the control in practice, because the gap between the two is usually where the real risk sits.

  3. 03

    Design

Design a proportionate control set with named ownership, evidence, and review cadence. Every control has an owner who can operate it and a defined source of evidence, so nothing depends on memory or heroics.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Embed the changes with the teams doing the work, and test that the controls operate. We hand over controls the process owners can run themselves, rather than a framework only we understand.
