Risk Register Management

A register that has not changed in months is usually a sign that it has stopped being used, not that nothing has changed. We operate and improve risk registers so entries stay specific enough to act on, scoring stays consistent across functions, and every risk has an owner who is genuinely accountable. The review cadence is set to the risk, with critical items looked at more often than the long tail. Reporting shows movement between cycles — what rose, what was treated, what is new — so the register drives decisions rather than merely recording them.

In short

Risk register management keeps the register accurate, owned and used — rather than a document reviewed once a year and trusted by no one. Its value lies in the discipline around it: specific statements, consistent scoring, named owners and a cadence that keeps it current.

What we do

The work inside risk register management.

Register design

We structure entries so each risk statement carries a cause, an event and a consequence, specific enough that a treatment can be designed. "Cyber risk" is a category, not a risk statement, and categories cannot be treated or owned. A well-formed statement is what lets everything downstream — scoring, ownership, treatment — actually work.

Consistent scoring

We apply scoring consistently across functions, with worked examples, so a high risk in one area is comparable with a high risk in another. Without this, priorities reflect the confidence of whoever scored rather than the actual exposure. Consistency is what makes a consolidated, cross-organisation view meaningful to leadership.

Ownership and review cadence

We assign each risk to an owner who can influence it and run the review rhythm that keeps entries current. Ownership without cadence lapses; cadence without ownership produces updates nobody stands behind. Together they are what keep the register a live tool rather than an annual artefact.

Treatment tracking and reporting

We track treatment progress against each risk and report movement, not just the current snapshot. Showing what has changed since the last cycle is what tells leadership whether the organisation's risk is improving or drifting. It also keeps owners accountable for treatments they committed to rather than letting them quietly stall.

What you receive

Deliverables, in writing.

Documented output your teams keep and can act on without us in the room.

  • Register structure and risk statement standard
  • Scoring guidance with worked examples
  • Review cadence with named owners
  • Periodic movement and treatment report

When this work helps

You may be facing this.

  • The register has not changed in months
  • Risk entries are too vague to act on
  • Different teams score comparable risks differently

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Establish the obligations, decision rights, and risks that genuinely matter to this organisation. We separate the requirements that truly apply from those assumed to, so effort is not spent governing risks you do not carry.

  2. 02

    Assess

Review existing controls, policy, evidence, and how the work is actually performed. We compare the control on paper with the control in practice, because the gap between the two is usually where the real risk sits.

  3. 03

    Design

Design a proportionate control set with named ownership, evidence, and review cadence. Every control has an owner who can operate it and a defined source of evidence, so nothing depends on memory or heroics.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Embed the changes with the teams doing the work, and test that the controls operate. We hand over controls the process owners can run themselves, rather than a framework only we understand.
