Legacy System Modernization

We assess legacy systems honestly — what to keep, wrap, replace or retire — and modernise incrementally so the business is never waiting on one large cutover. The first task is to understand what the system actually does, what depends on it and what it costs to run, before any option is chosen. We sequence change so each step delivers value and can be reversed, rather than betting everything on a single high-risk replacement. Where documentation is gone, which is common, we recover behaviour from the code, the data and the people who use it, and record it as we go.

In short

Legacy system modernization moves an ageing but business-critical system to a supportable state without stopping the business that depends on it. The constraint is that the old system usually cannot be switched off while its replacement is built.

What we do

The work inside legacy system modernization.

Assessment and option appraisal

We establish what the system does, what depends on it, what it costs to run and what the realistic options are. Much of the risk in a legacy system is hidden in undocumented dependencies and behaviour that only certain staff understand. Bringing that into the open is what lets the keep, wrap, replace or retire decision be made on evidence rather than nerve.

Incremental migration strategy

We sequence the change so each step delivers value and can be reversed, rather than one high-risk replacement. A reversible step means a problem can be rolled back without halting the business. Breaking the work into stages also lets the organisation absorb it, rather than enduring one disruptive cutover.

Data extraction and reconciliation

We recover, clean and reconcile historic data, including records with no current documentation. Old data carries years of accumulated meaning and quirks, and moving it blindly carries them into the new system too. We reconcile the migrated data against the source so you can trust that nothing was lost or quietly altered.

Interim integration

We wrap the old system with interfaces so new applications can proceed before the legacy platform is retired. A stable interface over the old system lets new work start now instead of waiting for a replacement that may be years away. It also decouples the new applications from the legacy internals, so retiring the old platform later is less disruptive.

What you receive

Deliverables, in writing.

Documented output your teams keep and can act on without us in the room.

  • Assessment report with dependencies, risks and run cost
  • Option appraisal: keep, wrap, replace or retire, with trade-offs
  • Incremental migration plan with reversible steps
  • Data migration and reconciliation approach

When this work helps

You may be facing this.

  • The system depends on one or two people who understand it
  • The platform or database version is out of support
  • New requirements are refused because the system cannot take them

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand the outcome, users, constraints, and the decisions that must be made before code direction is set. We spend this time with the people who own the result and the people who will build it, so scope reflects both.

  2. 02

    Assess

Examine the current architecture, delivery practice, integration surface, and engineering risk. We establish where the genuine difficulty lies, rather than accepting the risk the team already happens to worry about most.

  3. 03

    Design

Define the technical approach, delivery plan, quality gates, and ownership model in writing. Committing it to writing means the reasoning behind each decision survives staff change and supplier handover.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Work with your teams through build and release, adjusting the plan as evidence emerges rather than defending the original estimate. We keep the quality gates and progress evidence in place so leadership can watch the build land.

Where we work

Delhi, India — and wherever the work is.

Fidova provides software development consulting from Delhi, India, and works with product and engineering teams internationally — across India, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, the UK, and North America — remotely, with on-site time where the work needs it.

Engagements run in English, are scheduled around your time zone, and can be delivered remotely end to end, with on-site time planned where a phase genuinely benefits from being in the room.
