We enforce keys, constraints and transactions in the database rather than hoping application code is consistent. Rules enforced by the database hold no matter which application, script or person writes the data. This closes off the duplicate and contradictory records that application-level checks alone eventually let through.
We establish versioned migrations, backup schedules and restore tests that have actually been run. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a safeguard, so we test the restore and time it. Versioned migrations keep schema change controlled and repeatable across environments.
