Investment Advisory

We appraise capital investment proposals independently, examining the returns, the risks, the realistic alternatives and the conditions under which the case stops working. The work tests the assumptions and the benefits a sponsor has put forward, and looks hard for the costs a business case tends to omit. We compare each proposal against its alternatives, including smaller or staged versions, and against doing nothing. It matters because an appraisal that only ever confirms what the sponsor already wants adds no value, and because organisations that never check realised benefits keep approving the same optimistic cases.

In short

Investment advisory appraises capital investment proposals so funding decisions rest on tested analysis rather than sponsor enthusiasm. This is corporate investment appraisal for businesses, not regulated investment advice to investors.

What we do

The work inside investment advisory.

Business case review

We test the assumptions, the claimed benefits and the full cost of the proposal, including the costs a case tends to leave out. Implementation, disruption and ongoing running costs are routinely understated in favour of the headline benefit. Surfacing them gives the decision-maker the whole picture rather than the flattering half.

Return and risk analysis

We analyse the returns with risk-adjusted sensitivities and establish the break-even conditions on the variables that matter. Knowing how far an assumption can move before the case fails is more useful than a single expected return. It tells the board precisely what has to hold for the investment to pay back.

Alternatives comparison

We compare the proposal against its genuine alternatives, including smaller, staged or deferred options. A case presented in isolation looks stronger than it is, because the comparison is implicitly against nothing. Setting out the alternatives often reveals a lower-risk route to much of the same benefit.

Post-investment review

We review realised outcomes against the original case so that future appraisals are calibrated by experience. This is the only mechanism that systematically improves appraisal quality over time. Organisations that skip it keep repeating the same optimism because nothing ever contradicts it.

What you receive

Deliverables, in writing.

Documented output your teams keep and can act on without us in the room.

  • Business case review with assumption testing
  • Return and risk analysis with break-even conditions
  • Alternatives comparison
  • Post-investment review findings

When this work helps

You may be facing this.

  • Large capital requests arrive with optimistic single-scenario cases
  • Benefits from past investments were never verified
  • Investment decisions are made without comparing alternatives

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand the decision, the financial context, and how finance currently operates. We establish exactly what question the engagement must answer, so a business-case review and a process redesign are not confused with one another.

  2. 02

    Assess

Review the case, processes, controls, and reporting against what the organisation needs to rely on. We report where the numbers and processes are dependable and where they rest on assumptions that will not hold under pressure.

  3. 03

    Design

Set out the financial approach, process design, control set, and reporting model. Definitions, ownership, and controls are documented so the improvement does not depend on us remaining involved.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Support implementation, then track cost and benefit against what was approved. We measure realised value against the criteria agreed at the outset, so the decision is held to account rather than forgotten.
