Business Performance Management

We connect strategy to a small set of measures that genuinely reflect progress, each with an owner, a target traceable to the plan, and a review rhythm in which decisions actually get made. Long scorecards dilute attention and let poor performance hide behind good performance elsewhere, so the discipline is to keep the executive set small and the supporting detail beneath it. We also check that incentives reward the behaviour the strategy needs rather than cutting across it. It matters because strategy that is agreed but never measured changes nothing, and because performance reviews that discuss numbers without reaching decisions become a routine everyone quietly learns to treat as theatre.

In short

Business performance management connects strategy to measures, targets, accountability and review, so that performance is managed rather than merely reported. The test of the system is whether reviews end in decisions.

What we do

The work inside business performance management.

Measure framework

We define a small set of measures that genuinely reflect strategic progress rather than everything that happens to be countable. A handful of well-chosen measures at executive level directs attention far better than a long scorecard. The supporting detail sits beneath them, available when a number needs explaining but not competing for the board's attention.

Target setting

We set targets that are demanding, achievable and traceable back to the plan they come from. A target with no line to the plan invites gaming or quiet abandonment. Grounding each one in the underlying assumptions makes it both credible and defensible when it is reviewed.

Accountability and review cadence

We assign clear owners and run reviews that end in agreed decisions and actions, not just discussion. A review that closes without a decision record and an owner teaches everyone that the meeting does not matter. Holding reviews to that standard is what turns reporting into management.

Incentive alignment

We check that incentives reward the behaviour the strategy actually needs, and flag where they pull the other way. Incentives that reward volume when the strategy needs margin, or short-term results when it needs investment, quietly undo the plan. Aligning them is often the difference between a strategy that is pursued and one that is merely published.

How an engagement runs

Discover, assess, design, deliver.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand the decision, the financial context, and how finance currently operates. We establish exactly what question the engagement must answer, so a business-case review and a process redesign are not confused with one another.

  2. 02

    Assess

Review the case, processes, controls, and reporting against what the organisation needs to rely on. We report where the numbers and processes are dependable and where they rest on assumptions that will not hold under pressure.

  3. 03

    Design

Set out the financial approach, process design, control set, and reporting model. Definitions, ownership, and controls are documented so the improvement does not depend on us remaining involved.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Support implementation, then track cost and benefit against what was approved. We measure realised value against the criteria agreed at the outset, so the decision is held to account rather than forgotten.
